For a fleet operation to be successful, it needs to have a solid leader. This person should be able to convey the operation’s goals and mission and make the staff accountable for achieving them. To accomplish this, the leader needs to have certain traits that can allow him or her to earn the respect and buy-in from the rest of the staff.

Enthusiasm

According to Forbes.com, a leader should have genuine enthusiasm for the business and its mission. This means that the leader should fully embrace the fleet operation and its goals and be able to motivate the rest of the staff to follow the mission and values of the operation. If the leader is excited about the direction of the fleet, the employees will likely be more enthusiastic about achieving their own goals.

Results Driven

Good leaders should strive to achieve their goals and produce results. According to Inc.com, leaders have perseverance and drive and they can be counted on to get things done.

Ability to Make a Decision

Employees depend on their leader to steer the fleet operation in the right direction. Therefore, the leader needs to be able to make a decision that he or she feels is right for the operation and stick to it. According to Forbes.com, this includes being held accountable for the decision he or she makes and being willing to accept the consequences.

Ability to Communicate Effectively

Leaders need to be able to communicate effectively. This includes voicing their ideas, explaining new processes and goals, and discussing positive and negative outcomes with employees. Forbes.com also adds that a key part of communication is listening. It’s important for leaders to listen to feedback and ideas from their staff.

Competency to Manage, Develop People

One of the key parts of a leader’s role is to develop employees who report to him or her. This can include managing them to achieve their current goals and improve their performance, as well as help further their individual development through ongoing education and training.
